The Detroit Lions moved on from veteran wide receiver Tim Patrick early Wednesday morning, trading him to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The move solidifies the sentiments of individuals covering the Lions and their fans alike that rookie Isaac TeSlaa will eventually supplant Patrick on the roster. It happened to be sooner than expected.

TeSlaa did his part by having a sensational preseason. In four games, he had 10 receptions on 13 targets for 146 yards and three touchdowns, all in limited action, as he never played into the second half of any game. The Michigan native made some spectacular catches on two of the three touchdowns. Both were contested catches where TeSlaa leaped to secure the pass and shielded the ball from the defender with his body. He also made some plays off the ball, blocking for his teammates.

In exchange for Patrick, the Lions are getting back a sixth-round draft pick. NFL Insider, Tom Pelissero, was the first to break the news of the trade around 7 am EST on X (Twitter). The trade was a bit of a surprise to the fan base, as Patrick was a fan favorite.

During his one season in Detroit, Patrick was solid but not great in the Lions' offense. Patrick made 33 receptions on 44 targets for 394 yards and three touchdowns. What made him a fan favorite was that he made tough catches in the middle of the field on intermediate routes. The first play where he made his presence felt was in week six vs the Dallas Cowboys on a deep route down the sideline, and he made an excellent contested catch against former Lion Amani Oruwariye. Fans in Detroit will miss Patrick.

The Isaac TeSlaa hype train is warp speed ahead with the trade of Tim Patrick. Recently, when asked about the rookie wide receiver, Lions head coach Dan Campbell said, "I think there’s a place for him to help us early in this season." The first opportunity for the rookie to help the team happens September 7 at Lambeau Field against their division rival, the Green Bay Packers.
