The winter basketball league Unrivaled has now come to a close with the Mist being crowned the second-ever champion. They beat the Phantoms in the championship and dethroned the Rose, who won last season. With this win, the six players on the team split a $600,000 winning pot and get to claim the championship trophy. One player on the Mist BC, Breanna Stewart, now gets to put yet another title and trophy on her basketball resume.
One of the two co-founders of Unrivaled, Stewart also played for the Mist last season, but didn’t quite make the playoffs. This season saw a reversal of fortune for the team, as they made it into the postseason and had a huge comeback in the single playoff match at Barclays Center, Stewart’s home arena, when she plays in the WNBA with the New York Liberty. By the skin of their teeth, they knocked out the Breeze to make their way to the Championship game. Stewart was a huge part of their win, putting up 23 of the Mist’s 73 points in this game.
In the championship, Stewart scored 32 of the Mist’s 80 points, including the game-winning free throw. She also had four rebounds, five assists, two steals, and two blocks to help secure the title.
With her Unrivaled Championship, Stewart now becomes one of, if not the most, decorated players in women’s basketball history. In her collegiate career with the University of Connecticut, she won the championship in all four of her years in the NCAA. Not only that, she played 157 games and only lost five. From the beginning, it was clear that Stewart was going to have a long, historic career in basketball.
In the WNBA, she was selected first overall in 2016 by the Seattle Storm. Just two seasons later, she helped the Storm win the championship for the third time. She wasn’t done there, though, and helped Seattle win again in 2020.
She played with the Storm until 2022 and signed with the New York Liberty for the 2023 season. In 2024, she helped lead the Liberty to their first-ever championship.
She has not only helped lead her WNBA teams to victory, but she is also a two-time Olympic gold medalist and a three-time FIBA World Championship gold medalist.
The WNBA is currently in the offseason leading up to the 2026 season, and Stewart just won the championship in her own league, but she’s not done playing in the offseason just yet. She just announced she signed overseas with Team Fenerbahçe in Turkey. Stewart signed with this team to help them win the EuroLeague championship, which will take place in Spain from April 15 to April 19; she’ll definitely be looking to add another trophy to her resume.
Stewart is a leader on and off the court and an outstanding basketball player. As the captain of the Liberty, and the captain of the Mist, and all the championship titles to her name, she continues to prove why she is the best.
