The Eagles' Super Bowl defense ended earlier than expected after falling to the 49ers in the Wild Card Round, 23-19. Following the loss, Philadelphia announced that offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo was out at the position.
The Eagles offense averaged 22.3 points per game, which was 19th in the NFL. In 2024, Philadelphia ranked seventh while averaging 27.2 points per game with now Saints head coach Kellen Moore. As the offensive coordinator search continues, the team has a lot to think about heading into the offseason.
Today’s Hottest Take: Trading AJ Brown should be a serious consideration
AJ Brown is undoubtedly one of the best receivers in the NFL and has only made Philadelphia better since arriving, but a change might be good for both sides.
While Brown has amassed 1,000 yards and scored at least seven touchdowns since joining the Eagles in 2022, he has shown his frustrations with the offense multiple times to the public.
Brown voiced his concerns with the offense early in the season, saying “It has to change, it has to evolve, we have to find ways to get better.” The Super Bowl LIX champion receiver didn’t speak to the media following the playoff loss.
While what Brown brings on the field would be very hard to replace, the question is if the off the field drama isn’t worth keeping him around the locker room.
General manager Howie Roseman was asked about the possibility of trading Brown at the end of year press conference.
"We talked about this I think at the trade deadline last time I talked," Roseman said. "It is hard to find great players in the NFL and AJ is a great player. I think from my perspective that’s what we’re going out and looking for, when we go here out in free agency, in the draft, is trying to find great players who love football and he’s that guy. So that would be my answer."
Brown, who had just three catches for 25 yards in the Wild Card loss, had multiple drops in the game, including a third down drop late in the game that could have been a big play.
According to ESPN’S Jeremy Fowler, the Eagles could save seven million in cap space if they trade Brown after June 1. Who the Eagles hire as their next offensive coordinator will also likely play a role in the decision to trade Brown or not.
Before You Go: The latest on the offensive coordinator search
As of Monday, the search continues for Philadelphia. The Eagles have been linked to and have interviewed a number of candidates, including new Chargers OC Mike McDaniel, former Giants head coach Brian Daboll, new Buccaneers OC Zac Robinson, Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka, and former Chiefs OC Matt Nagy, to name a few.
However, the names on the list have started to dwindle. Daboll, who was reported as one of the teams top targets, wants the Bills head coaching gig and could end up with the Titans as their offensive coordinator if he doesn’t get the Buffalo job. Also, McDaniel was likely atop the list for the Eagles, but withdrew his name to take the Chargers job.
New developments also came out on Monday that LSU offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. spoke to the Eagles, but has decided to stay in college with the Tigers. Another young and promising coordinator, Declan Doyle, also withdrew his name from the search according to Dianna Russini.
With a lot of withdrawals coming around the league for both coordinator and head coaching jobs, many think a decision could come in the next few days for the Eagles.
The latest reported interviews following the conference championship games included Texans’ quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson, who coached with Nick Sirianni on the Colts in 2020. Johnson was also considered two years ago when the team hired Brian Johnson. Philadelphia also reportedly interviewed former Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith.
While the search is still ongoing and there is no shortage of strong football minds out there, it does feel like the Eagles have missed out on some of the top options that they may have expected when the search began.
