Today’s Hot Take: Tony Pollard setting the tone with the run game is exactly what we've been waiting for
The Titans finally found themselves back in the win column on Sunday as they earned a hard-fought win over the Browns, 31-29, for their second win of the season. In that victory, Tony Pollard had his best game as a Titan, rushing for 161 yards and two touchdowns as he solidified the run game for the Titans.
Pollard has been a great addition to the Titans since he signed with them last season, posting 1,079 rushing yards then, and now he is at 743 this season. Titans fans only have good things to say about Pollard, as he has been a great running back with one of the worst offensive lines in the league.
Pollard gets solid yardage every game, around 60-70 yards with multiple receptions, but if he can command the run game the way he did Sunday, it will take all the pressure away from Cam Ward. Ward only threw for 117 yards on Sunday, on just 14 completions. This did include two touchdowns to Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike, but normally, those numbers would not be enough to win a game.
This is the help that a quarterback needs to be successful, and Titans fans know very well what Derrick Henry brought to the table for a long time while in Tennessee. Now Pollard won’t put up crazy numbers like that, but the consistency will go a long way in helping Ward grow in the future.
What You Need to Know: Chimere Dike looks like a steal in last year’s draft
Dike is currently on pace to break the record for the most scrimmage yards in a season for this team. He had a 41-yard kick returns on Sunday, which led to the Browns staying away from him the rest of the game. Dike also scored what would be the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter, for his third receiving touchdown of the year.
Whether the Titans win or lose, it seems that Dike’s name is constantly coming up every week. He just keeps getting better as time goes on, and as he continues to develop now at the wide receiver position, it isn’t out of the question that he could be a solid WR3 next year.
Titans rookies have continued to have great development throughout this season, and I think that with the right free agents, and especially the right coaching staff, this team can make a solid jump heading into next year.
Before you go: The Titans face a difficult test on the road against San Francisco
The Titans will now travel to the Bay Area to take on the 49ers this Sunday. The Titans getting back-to-back wins seems like a long shot, especially with the improvements the 49ers have made this season, after an expected fall off. Robert Salah has revitalized their defense, and the offense continues to produce with Christian McCaffrey at the forefront.
This may be one of Ward’s toughest challenges yet. Salah has an excellent winning percentage of 75% against rookie quarterbacks. Ward is going to have to play a near-perfect game if the Titans want a shot in this one, but another quality game will once again demonstrate the growth that this Titans team is seeing.
