The Titans have been getting busy since with free agency looming, as they have already mad their first trade of the offseason. They sent nose tackle T’Vondre Sweat to the Jets in exchange for defensive end Jermaine Johnson.
This trade should be looked at as a win for both teams, as Johnson is a former Pro-Bowler who was drafted by Robert Saleh in New York and knows his defensive system. The Titans also desperately need a better pass rush and as many weapons as possible on defense.
For the Jets they get a solid run stopper in Sweat who can improve one of the worst defenses in the league. The Jets also clear more cap space, giving them the opportunity to sign some of their star players like Breece Hall.
This is a gamble that will hopefully pay off for the Titans as they can get a player who is entering his prime, and will hopefully return to his pro bowl playing ways.
Tennessee isn’t done there as they have already made multiple roster cuts with more on the way as well. They started by cutting center Lloyd Cushenberry and safety Xavier Woods, saving them around $5.5-$6 million in cap space moving forward for the offseason.
Woods signed a two-year, $8 million deal in 2025, but with how bad the Titans defense was in 2025, Woods didn’t make the impact that fans had hoped for even with his two intercptions, and 40 tackles. It looks like Woods took a massive step back after his big season in Carolina in 2024.
For Cushenberry his time with the Titans was unlucky to say the least. After a solid four years in Denver, Cushenberry signed a four-year, $50 million dollar contract with the Titans before the 2024 season. Eight games into the season he tore his ACL, and his season was over. Cushenberry came backin 2025 and definitely improved, but not enough to the Titans liking as they decided to go their separate ways.
Titans fans know there are more cuts coming, and these two should clear up cap space as the Titans will likely cut L’Jarius Sneed and Calvin Ridley to free up even more space. Cutting the two will create a combined $24 million in cap space, on top of the $5.5-$6 million they have already saved. They will save $13 million from the four-year $92 million contract Ridley signed before the 2024 season, and they will save $11 million from Sneed’s four-year, $76.4 million contract he signed before the 2024 season as well.
The Titans will look to the draft as another way to build their roster like they did they last season. The more players the Titans cut, the better off they are. Mike Borgonzi is starting to make solid moves as the GM, and with free agency right around the corner, don’t be surprised when the Titans turn heads in free agency.
