John Harbaugh Is The Obvious Best Coach For The New York Giants

With the New York Giants' season over and the head coach position vacant, their search for their next leader has already begun.

The team has wasted no time looking for their guy, including interviews with former linebacker Antonio Pierce and Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski. They are also expected to have interviews with Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, and Seattle Seahawks coordinator Klint Kubiak.

Despite the names already being interviewed, John Harbaugh triumphs over all given his track record and his aggressive but loving coaching style. There is no room for error for the Giants not to get him.

My Hottest Take: Harbaugh’s Coaching Style Fits The Team’s Direction

Harbaugh’s coaching philosophy, albeit unorthodox, is the reason why he stayed in Baltimore so long and made them perennial playoff contenders after the Brian Billick era.

ESPN did a long-form story on Harbaugh’s coaching style in 2016, showcasing that the then-head coach saw the football team as “family.” He used that love for his players and the game to instill a winning culture and churn out successful teams. Much like his brother, Jim Harbaugh, his fiery temper but very personalized approach makes the culture a winning culture, something New York has lacked for years.

If they're on your team, you're their dad," John told ESPN at the time. "They deserve your love. And if you can't like them, or love them, either you shouldn't be the coach or they shouldn't be on the team. Every player should know that you love them, and you care about them, even when they act crazy. Even when you discipline them. Even when you tell them it's not OK, that you're going to be there on the end of the bench. But I still love you. I still love you."

More recently, SI published a five-point piece highlighting Harbaugh’s key traits that made him a successful coach. Two of these, which New York absolutely needs, are a willingness to pivot and to be innovative. With unconventional players in Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo, alongside an aggressive defense setup, the time has never been more ripe for the team to be creative on both sides of the ball.

That innovation would surely erase the memories of bad playcalling on defense during the Shane Bowen era, and the quarterback sneaks on third-and-nine during the Joe Judge era.

What You Need To Know: Even The President Agrees

Everyone in the sports world agrees that the Giants not only should, but must get John Harbaugh on their sideline. The team is taking that advice to heart, scheduling meetings and even going to his house for lunch. Even former longtime Giants coach Tom Coughlin is trying to recruit Harbaugh to the team over the Atlanta Falcons and the Tennessee Titans.

It’s one thing for the entire sports world to get on your case for the coach, but it’s an entirely different animal for the President of the United States to take time out of his day to agree. On Jan. 10, President Donald Trump even told the Giants to hire Harbaugh and for the former Baltimore head coach to take the job.

“The New York Football Giants should hire, without question, John Harbaugh - And John, a great guy, should TAKE THE JOB,” the president posted on his social media account.

Regardless of what you think about politics, this is pretty funny and shows that the ball is in the Giants’ court this time around. There is no excuse for the team not to at least try to get Harbaugh, and they’re doing just what the on-field product has lacked for a decade: Effort and the ability to try.

Before You Go: The Giants Face Stiff Competition

Again, the Giants are far from the only team trying to get John Harbaugh on their sidelines. There are only eight of these job vacancies in the world, and some of those teams might be more alluring than New York’s team.

One such team that has popped up in articles is the Atlanta Falcons, who also have a general manager position open. Harbaugh’s reported list of demands included a say in roster and personnel decisions, which means he could play a gigantic hand in getting the guy he wants for those selections.

The Miami Dolphins have also been seen as a spot for the coach to land, given their versatile offense and the fact that they are resetting most of their squad after the Mike McDaniels era. Again, having say in personnel decisions and roster selections are key for him to make a decision.

If the Giants want to secure Harbaugh, Joe Schoen must let some of his control over roster decisions go with John Mara’s approval. Mara isn’t the most hands-on owner in football either, so this should be an easy ask. Whether the Giants succeed is up to the team itself.
