With a month left until the NFL draft, which will be hosted April 22-25 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, there are various options for the Indianapolis Colts to consider.
The NFL draft is quickly approaching, which means teams have to make decisions. There are some teams that have easier decisions than others, but nothing is decided yet. The Indianapolis Colts have multiple positions they will be looking for going into the draft.
There is no consensus on who the Colts will draft first or even what position they will target first. They were able to acquire defensive players during free agency, like safety Jonathan Owens and Cam Taylor-Britt, but still have gaps that need to be filled.
The Colts are without a first-round pick, having traded a 2026 and 2027 first-round pick along with wide receiver Adonai Mitchell for Sauce Gardner from the New York Jets. With the 47th overall pick, the Colts have been exploring multiple possibilities.
During free agency, the Colts lost multiple starters, including linebacker Zaire Franklin, edge rusher Kwity Paye, defensive end Samson Ebukam and safety Nick Cross. With these losses, the Colts must look for defensive players. In addition, on the offensive side of things, they lost tackle Braden Smith, wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. and offensive lineman Danny Pinter.
For Indianapolis, this means there are multiple directions for the club to go in when it comes to the draft. There are many spots that need to be filled and prospects that are being looked at. The Colts have seven picks in total, so there are multiple chances to get the positions needed.
With the Colts losing so many defensive players, that needs to be a focus for them. There were some solid players picked up in free agency, but there are still disparities between the talent they lost and what they gained.
Multiple options have been thrown out regarding the Colts' pick. Given the losses on defense, a young, defensive prospect should be the goal. Some of the names thrown out have been defensive end Zion Young from Missouri, linebacker Jacob Rodriguez from Texas Tech and linebackerAnthony Hill Jr. from Texas.
Other draft mock-ups have included wide receivers for the Colts' first pick, which is another place the team is lacking. With the loss of Pittman Jr., the Colts need to add weapons for Daniel Jones. Resigning Pierce was key, but it cost a lot of money, so investing in a rookie will be essential.
For the Colts, their focus should be on drafting defense first and then offensive weapons. The offense is returning its main producers in Taylor and Pierce. The defense was the biggest area of concern, and it lost five starters who were contributors on defense.
Indianapolis ended ranked No.21 out of all teams according to Pro Football Focus. The first pick should be a player who can perform in passing defense. If available, Young, who ranked 19th in pass rush win rate, is a perfect fit for what the Colts need. Hill Jr. is another strong prospect, being only a junior and performing every season.
Without a first-round pick, the Colts will be more limited in options, but they have a clear direction they should go. Once a defensive player is secured, the Colts can worry about offense, but with seven picks, most should focus on defense, and offense should be secondary.
