T’Vondre Sweat, DT – via trade with Titans for Jermaine Johnson, DE
The first move that was made this offseason was a trade with the Titans for T’Vondre Sweat, and I really like this move. Sweat is young (only 24), and Johnson is aging (27) and hasn’t been healthy in a couple of seasons. Even when Johnson was healthy, his numbers were not enough for me to support him staying. Now, Sweat only played in 12 games in the 2025 season, but I think the potential is there for him to become a force and really develop. I think the Jets easily won this trade.
My Grade: A-
Minkah Fitzpatrick, S – via trade with Dolphins for 2026 7th-round pick
This trade is easily a win for the Jets. They receive a great defensive player for a seventh-round pick, unless the Dolphins find Mr. Irrelevant with that pick, then I think they will be fine. After this trade, the Jets signed Minkah to a 3-year, $40 million contract, and I think Minkah’s veteran status will be a great addition to the defense. I think he will surprise a lot of people in the 2026 season.
My Grade: A
Joseph Ossai, DE – 3-year, $36 million Free Agent Signing
This was an interesting signing. I think Ossai is a diamond in the rough. In his 14 games last season, nine of which he started, he forced two fumbles, gained five sacks, and had nine tackles for loss. I feel like he will show up and show out on the Jets, and that sack number will be double digits. He played on one of the worst defenses in the league with the Bengals. I think with this change of scenery, he will shine bright.
My Grade: B+
Kingsley Enagbare, DE – 1-year $10 million Free Agent Signing
I don’t really know what to make of Kingsley. He only started three games last year and didn’t really do much, but with this team, it can’t get much worse than it already is, so might as well try everything. Not much more to say on this signing, he’s average.
My Grade: C+
Demario Davis, LB – 2-year $22 million Free Agent Signing
I think every Jets fan is happy that Davis is back with the Jets. This is his first time back with the team since 2017, after his stint in New Orleans, and I think even at his age, he can still go. Davis had a career-high combo tackles last season with 143, six tackles for losses, and two forced fumbles. Davis will bring good energy to the locker room, and another veteran is always good to have, especially with the younger talent on the team.
My Grade: B
David Onyemata, DT – 1-year $10.5 million Free Agent Signing
Another veteran signing by the Jets. I think the main plan is to have him be a mentor to Sweat, which will be good for him and help him grow as a player. Onyemata hasn’t done anything particularly great in the past couple of years, so I do question this signing a bit, but if the goal was to work with Sweat like I think it is, then I can get on board.
My Grade: B-
Andrew Beck, FB – 1-year $1.5 million Re-signing
Personally, I don’t see the point in fullbacks, so I am against this signing in that regard, but Beck is mainly just for depth at this point, so no point in looking into it too much. Beck played in every game last season and started two, where he scored two touchdowns, which, honestly, is two more than I would have guessed.
My Grade: D-
Dane Belton, S – 1-year $6 million Free Agent Signing
So, this signing, I really like. Taking a look at Belton’s stats, in the 17 games he played, nine of which he started, he had one interception, three forced fumbles, and 120 combo tackles, three of which were for losses. Belton will be 26, so he is still in the young part of his career, and I think the Jets will re-sign him after this season. Overall, I think Belton will add a lot more power to this defense if he is a starter.
My Grade: B+
Geno Smith, QB – via trade with the Raiders for 2026 6th-round pick (also gained a 7th- round pick)
Well, I’m sure this is the move you have been waiting for. I really don’t think this was the best move at all, especially when options like Kyler Murray were out there. No matter who the Jets got, it was going to be bad, but I have one hypothesis as to what is happening. Think about it, the 2027 draft will most likely be headlined by the next Manning prodigy, Arch. Geno did a great job last year of giving the Raiders the first overall pick, so maybe the Jets were inspired by this and decided to give Geno both a reunion and a benefit to them, which would be the first overall pick. Will Geno be the hero the Jets need and lead them to the promised land of a franchise quarterback?
My Grade: C
Nahshon Wright, DB – 1-year $5.5 million Free Agent Signing
This is another signing I like. Wright seems like he has a lot to bring, even for someone who is in the middle of his career. Last season, he had 80 combined tackles, with two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, five interceptions, and 11 pass deflections. This past season was a breakout for Wright, who was second overall among cornerbacks in interceptions. Looking at the fact that the whole Jets defense had zero interceptions in 17 games last season, Wright will be a great addition. Honestly, I think he could be a great leader for the cornerback room next season.
My Grade: A-
Cade York, K – 1-year (no other details) Free Agent Signing
The Jets have brought York to New York. After losing one of their best players in Nick Folk, the Jets had to go kicker shopping and find a new main man. York has been consistent in his career in extra points, only missing three times, but in field goals, he is iffy, but maybe he’ll come back strong and show off.
My Grade: C+
Max Mitchell, OT – 1-year (no other details) Re-signing
Realistically, not much to say here. Mitchell resigns. I have nothing of note to say about him or what he can do. His signing was for depth, so I don’t anticipate him playing much anyway.
My Grade: C-
Dylan Parham, G – 2-year $20 million Free Agent Signing
Well, another signing like Mitchell, where I can’t really say anything. I hope he does his job and does it well. He is getting paid a lot of money, so if he sucks, it will definitely make a lot of fans upset.
My Grade: C
Mykal Walker, LB – 1-year (no other details) Free Agent Signing
Well, Walker hasn’t done much in the last three seasons, but if he comes in as he played in 2022, then I think this works well. It seems he hasn’t been able to stay healthy, minus the 2024 season, but he did nothing notable with the Commanders. This is kind of like the last couple of signings. I hope they show up and show out, but I can’t make many other comments because there isn’t much to go off.
My Grade: C
Overall, Glenn and the Jets are clearly focused on building a defense that turns the ball over a lot and trying to find their answers to problems at other positions. The goal is to be better than 3-14, but is a tank season worth it for the franchise quarterback in the 2027 draft?
