Are The Philadelpia Eagles Still Super Bowl Contenders?

Despite remaining atop the NFC East, the Eagles have struggled as of late.

After blowing a 21-point lead to the Dallas Cowboys the week prior, Philadelphia fell to the Bears on Black Friday 24-15 at Lincoln Financial Field. The Eagles struggled on both sides of the ball, allowing 281 rushing yards on defense while the offense didn’t find the end zone until halfway through the third quarter.

As of today, the Eagles would be the No. 3 seed in the NFL playoffs sitting at 8-4 with five weeks remaining. Philadelphia hasn’t looked like a title contender, but there is still time to turn things around for the defending champions.

Today’s Hottest Take: The Eagles shouldn’t change playcallers at this point in the season

Now, let me be clear–I am by no means saying he should still call plays now and in the future.

Philadelphia is ranked 24th in the NFL in offense and has been out-gained in10 of their 12 games this season. But my point here is that it’s Week 14 and the Eagles are 8-3. Six of those wins came against teams who made the playoffs last year and are in the running still this season.

And as head coach Nick Sirianni and offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo have said, everyone on the offensive staff works as a cohesive unit to come up with the gameplan. Going from one coach who was already previously in the building before being promoted to another could end up making things even more difficult.

Not only does it prevent a sense of doubt within the team, it could create another layer of confusion to an already out-of-sorts offense. Sirianni has stated that Patullo will remain the play caller multiple times over the last week, but said after the loss to the Bears that “everything will be evaluated.”

“We’re all involved, that’s what’s cool. He’s (Sirianni) not just someone who says this is what I want, this is how it has to be done. It’s all of us, together, working through this as an offensive staff with him,” Patullo said on Wednesday. “Every coach has a big role in it. So, when you process through information, you’ve got to decide is this something that is a schematic issue? Is it an execution issue? What is it? And then what are we doing well and what do we have coming up down the line.”

I don’t think giving play calling responsibilities to Sirianni or another coach on staff would change things much, especially if execution really is an issue for this offense.

While the offense has shown small flashes of what it can be and has been mediocre the rest of the time, Philadelphia simply has to ride this season out and hope to catch fire at the right time ahead of January.

Before You Go: Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert’s injury status is up in the air

The Eagles defense will need to have a major bounce back game after their worst performance of the season against the Bears. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert underwent surgery to stabilize a fracture in his left hand Monday and is considered day-to-day.

On Wednesday, head coach Jim Harbaugh said the team is preparing as if Herbert will be the starter, which would make the task a tall one for the visiting Eagles and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

Fangio was asked on Wednesday how the Eagles are preparing for the matchup despite the Chargers’ quarterback situation being up in the air.

“Yeah, we’ll have to prepare for both quarterbacks. Probably knowing that if Herbert plays, he’ll be in the pistol a lot and in the gun (formation). We’ll have to be ready for both.
