Should Boston Red Sox Fans Be Concerned?

The Boston Red Sox have officially played the first four games of their season. Unfortunately, they are sitting at the bottom of the AL East with a record of 1–3. On the plus side, there are 158 more games to play this campaign.

My Hottest Take: Do not count this team out yet

Yes, the Red Sox are sitting at 1–3. Yes, there has been little offense. Yes, the offseason acquisitions have not been hitting or pitching the way people had hoped. But there are 158 more games. These are their first four games together as a team. It is the first time some have stepped into a Red Sox uniform; sure, they have been major leaguers, but people say all the time how much pressure being on one of the biggest teams in the league can be.

Sure, Sonny Gray and Ranger Suarez only pitched four innings each and they were banged around, but there were also some moments in their outings that showed what they could be. Gray struck out five and walked one, and Suarez struck out three and walked one. Caleb Durbin has gone 0–12 in the first four games of the season. Willson Contreras has one hit and four walks. But that means nothing, as this is not the National Football League with just 17 games; there are 162, and the Red Sox started the same way last year and ended up going to the playoffs.

You Should Know: We're Only Four Games Into The Season

Four games. The games have been hard to watch, not going to lie. Losing two back-to-back close games sucks, and then getting smacked around by the Astros is no fun. It has not been that the team is playing bad baseball—there have only been two errors—but the bats have been silent. Once the bats start going, this team is going to be scary. The top three batters have the chance to hit at least 20 home runs each, Wilyer Abreu is hot as can be, and there are things that can go right for this team. They are playing with what seems like no confidence and a sped-up game, rather than really digging in and watching the pitches.

Before You Go: Just because they are down, don’t count them out

Skids happen. This team won 89 games last season with a similar start. Granted, they did go 24–9 when Garrett Crochet was on the mound and had a 10-game winning streak going into the All-Star Game, but they still won 89 games. The team needs to gain their confidence, which is what they will do as soon as they get back to what they did in game one of the season. It’s hard to come into Houston with Yordan Alvarez, who seems to murder the Red Sox every time, as well as striking out 13 times.

The team will really just have to wipe these last three games off and focus on what is coming. The Red Sox can win games. The Red Sox have power hitters. They just have to find their footing, which will come. Obviously, it is hard to believe when this is all fans have to base their thoughts on, but that is why baseball is 162 games and not like any other sport that has a shorter season. They will figure out their game, and when they do, be ready for the Red Sox.
