Lotteries, Odds, and Organizational Direction

Come time of the end of the NBA regular season, the Brooklyn Nets are in an expected advantageous spot with the potential of landing in the top three area to select an NBA Draft pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.Currently ranked at No. 3 on the latest Tankathon standings with a 52% chance of landing a top-four pick in the NBA Draft and a 14% chance of landing the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft, the Nets are in an excellent position to pick an excellent young talent in the upcoming NBA Draft.

However, this has not been an accident by any means. The Nets have been building for the future with an abundance of young talent as they strive to regain their status. A team who was formerly known as one of the best teams in the NBA a few years ago with attempting to win the championship with a superteam of free agents via Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden, is now playing it smart after the very close but failed attempt.

Currently, the Nets have an large number of assets for the upcoming NBA Draft with 13 picks in the first round of the NBA Draft for the next couple of years , with 10 of them being tradable.

NBA Anti-Tanking Agenda: What’s Really Changing

While the Nets are taking full advantage of the rewards of their placement now, NBA commissioner Adam Silver is taking the advantage to address the problem of tanking in the NBA. This term “tanking” refers to the practice of manipulating lineups to lose games to fall in the standings and pick higher in the draft.

Silver has been very adamant about his stance on the issue, saying that “this is not who we are going to be as a league” when it comes to losing games to gain picks in the draft. According to reports of meetings between Silver and other NBA officials with their general managers, the problem has reached the level where changes must be made, although the nature of those changes is still being discussed as of now.

In his address during the NBA's All-Star Weekend, Silver presented the two-pronged approach that the NBA intends to take: an immediate examination of the behavior of teams, and an in-depth examination of the lottery system itself. He said that tanking had been "worse this year than we've seen in recent memory," and that was a clear sign of the NBA's intent to seriously consider significant reform.

A wide range of possibilities are on the table, including:

  • Locking in the lottery chances at the trade deadline so teams cannot "tank" the last portion of the season.

  • Modifying the lottery system to consider a larger number of teams, or a multi-year record, as the WNBA does.

  • Limiting the number of consecutive top-4 picks to stop teams from rebuilding through consecutive losing seasons.

  • Equalizing the chances of teams that finish with the worst record in the standings.

League Voices: Integrity vs. Strategy

However, not all voices within the NBA believe that tanking poses a huge league wide problem. Some argue that the NBA might be overreacting, saying that competitiveness, playoff seeding, and entertainment value are still important to the grand scheme, especially in a strategic rebuilding phase. Although not a direct quote from an NBA personality, ESPN writes that there are in house debates on whether these proposed reforms could unfairly penalize rebuilding teams and kill any strategic possibilities for those rebuilding teams.

What the Nets Are Doing and Avoiding

The Nets’ plan, both critics of the team and fans agree, is unique from the more obvious “tank” jobs that have drawn the NBA’s attention over the last few months. Other teams, like the Jazz and the Pacers, have been fined for giving their All-Star performers a seat on the bench in games that seemed within winning reach. These actions were seen as going against the integrity of competition for the NBA. Now Brooklyn has not been subjected to such measures this season because of the fact that their “younger talent-focused” starting lineup is not based on hiding All-Star-caliber performers from competition.

The Nets, in theory, are “straddling the line” between losing and rebuilding with a clear focus on both the draft lottery and developing talent while avoiding the known perception of “throwing games” to meet organizational goals in order to obtain a higher draft pick.

Impacts and Strategic Forecast

What does this mean for the Nets as they look to the June draft? In the shorter term, these anti-tanking rules will not affect the Nets' chances in the upcoming 2026 lottery or their spot in the draft for the 2026 class. As a reminder, the NBA officials have made it clear that any such rules are intended for the 2026-27 season and beyond, not for any quick application towards this season's standings. This maintains and helps the Nets' current strategy, and it could be a very lucrative one, as they look to take advantage of a strong upcoming 2026 draft class.

Of course, were the NBA to install these rules regarding lottery chances, consecutive picks, and/or multi-year player performance, Brooklyn, like all teams in the NBA, would need to reassess their strategy. A system that does not reward teams for having the worst record could mean teams would need to balance development and competitiveness evenly as much as possible.

In that prospective, the Nets' focus on their young players could be a big favor for them no matter what the rules are. They'll have a nucleus of young players getting real NBA experience, an assortment of draft assets, and an organization that's very adept at navigating complex strategic situations.

Conclusion

The 2026 NBA Draft could be the beginning of a new chapter in Brooklyn’s history, all while navigating a changing landscape of how teams are rewarded for losing or winning. While it is a draft pick, it is so much more to the Brooklyn faithful, analysts, and those in the front office. The 2026 NBA Draft is a case study of how teams are rebuilt in the modern age of basketball.
