Erick Fedde Might Be What the Milwaukee Brewers Need, Despite Falling to 4-13 on the Season

Even during their most brutal stretch of the season, the Milwaukee Brewers continue to find a way to win. Their pitching staff is as taxed as ever, with Trevor Megill’s injury only making things worse. Pat Murphy’s squad may stand 83-51, though I'd bet the front office knows they can’t take it for granted.

That might be why they brought in Erick Fedde. The 32-year-old righty has been in the league since 2017, aside from a 2023 run in Korea that re-launched his MLB career. His numbers don’t look the best on paper, but if the team trusts in Chris Hook to turn around pitchers' careers.

Fedde didn’t start in his Brewers debut, though he did make an impact. Aaron Ashby took the bump at the start of the game but lasted just two innings. It was an expected short start as Ashby acted as the opener for Fedde.

71 pitches were thrown as Fedde nailed 52 of those for strikes. While the veteran gave up eight hits, he was able to eat up a large chunk of innings. Lasting four and one-third, Murphy and Hook were probably thrilled with his contribution, even if it came in a loss.

At the end of the day the Brewers bats didn’t show up. For a team that scored seven and nine runs in the first two games of the series, eventually things caught up to them. Going 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position isn’t going to win many ballgames.

Fedde’s ERA sits at 5.71 after his debut in Milwaukee. He did give up a pair of earned runs, but his ERA did drop from the 5.76 it was coming into the game. Knowing Milwaukee wasn’t able to provide him with the necessary run support, he fell to 4-13.

Don’t let the loss fool you as this was Fedde’s best outing since June 19. The end of June wasn’t too kind to him, though it’s one of the only months where he didn’t give up a run in an outing. June 19 saw Fedde give up just one run in five innings against his former team, the struggling Chicago White Sox.

It marked Fedde’s first loss since August 4, where he coincidentally faced the Brewers. He will remain a huge part of this Brewers bullpen/starting rotation, wherever the team sees fit. Should they need to give Brandon Woodruff an extra day of rest, it’s easy to throw Fedde into the rotation as a sixth starter. There are plenty of options for the ninth-year player, who is hoping that this trip to Milwaukee might be like his run with the NC Dinos and give his career new life.
