The Boston Red Sox are currently sitting with the worst record in baseball at 2-8. They have lost several close games and have had leads in games with the bullpen giving them up. Miscues are also a part of the problem; it seems like everything and anything is falling apart for them ... and it kind of is.
My Hottest Take: Once the Pitching Figures Itself Out, This Team Will Be Scary
Yes, the record is depressing. Yes, there are chants at the ballpark to sell the team. But it’s game 11. 11. People can say this team may not make the playoffs, but how is that determined in 11 games?
The pitching has been a bit of a problem. The pitching staff is sitting at 22nd in the league with a 4.58 ERA. The only two starting pitchers to go more than five full innings in one game have been Garrett Crochet and Sonny Gray. Connelly Early has gone 5 1/3 innings in his second start. Ranger Suarez and Brayan Bello have not thrown well. Bello has gone just four innings, and Suarez has gone 4 1/3. That means the bullpen needs to go five-plus innings a night, which is not great for so early on in the season.
The home run bug has also bitten the Red Sox pitchers. They have given up 13 homers in just 10 games, tied for eighth in the league; last year the team had the fourth-lowest home runs given up.
What You Need To Know: The Offense is Figuring Itself Out Slowly
While the offense needs to be a little bit more consistent, and they need to start being more relaxed in the box, the team can hit the ball. They currently sit 14th in the league with a team average of .226. The last two games each they have scored six runs; before that, there were just two games where they scored more than four runs. The Red Sox are currently tied for 23rd in home runs, with just nine home runs on the season, which is normal given the fact that they do not have a power bat. Small ball has been starting to pay off for the team, with most of their runs having come from the doubles and singles that the players have hit.
While they are waking up, the team is still working on the ABS system, as well as keeping swinging within the strike zone. Trevor Story alone has swung at 43 pitches outside the strike zone. The team has gotten better about challenging and will continue to improve as they start to settle down and stop chasing outside the zone.
Before You Go: Baseball is a Marathon, Not a Sprint
There is a reason baseball is referred to as a marathon, not a sprint. It fluctuates and changes; no game is ever the same. The worst team in the league can beat the best on any given day, and one game could have a position player pitching half the game. That is why fans, no matter what the record looks like, should not be worried. The pitchers will figure things out; they are just not syncing with their pitches, and their command is a bit off. If Suarez had not had that one bad inning in his last outing against the Padres, there was a chance he probably could have gone another inning or two.
Game 11 marks the third time around for the rotation; maybe that's all they need to get kickstarted.
